Artist Spotlight: Lauren Coons

This week’s spotlighted artist is interdisciplinary composer, performer, healing artist, and educator - Lauren Valerie Coons!

Lauren Valerie Coons is an interdisciplinary composer, performer, healing artist, and educator from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In her creative work, she synthesizes her backgrounds in music, dance, mindfulness and meditation, and creative writing into intermedia performance pieces for a broad range of instrumentation, electronics, movement, written and spoken word, and visual art. She has composed works for a number of artists and institutions including the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Orchestra, the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Abrepaso Flamenco, Wave Dash, New Mexico Contemporary Ensemble, and New Music New Mexico. Her work as a healing artist and educator includes serving as an artist-in-medicine at UNM Hospitals, co-teaching the Healing Arts courses at the University of New Mexico, teaching dance and music classes to youth and adults, and offering private lessons and sessions in guitar, composition, mindful music-making, active meditation and Bodyfulness practices, and Pilates.

Lauren holds a Master of Music degree in Music Theory & Composition and Musicology from the University of New Mexico, a mindfulness and meditation teacher certification from the School of Positive Transformation, and Pilates certifications from AFPA and Polestar Pilates.

Her current class offerings include adult contemporary dance at Maple Street Dance Space, youth dance classes at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque, and private sessions with individuals and small groups.
