Thoughts and Ideas

Musing

"How are you?" The broadly accepted, programmed add-on to a general greetings. The expected scripted response? A bland response and counter posed "fine, how are your?" Often no answer appears, we keep walking. How is it that a question at once so simple and so complex became the lite banter of a greeting? Explore the answer. Imagining alternative and real responses could be a daydream of comedy, tragedy, or a dissertation on self analysis. Can we change the script to meet the occasion? With what might we replace the phrase?

Creative Experiment

Imagine a dramatic variety of circumstances and people, a list both ridiculous and normal, and ask the question through gesture, "how are you?". Vary the tone and gestures, vary the dynamic range, vary the focus and timing. Change roles and imagine movement responses to the variations you have created on "how are you?", from both the same imagined respondent, and different respondents. How different does a response feel with and without eye contact? Explore. If you have a group, make a "choir" for both groups, those asking and those responding. Follow any impulses that occur to you and see where it leads.
