Musing

Show not tell. We understand "tell" verbally and in written form. What does it mean in dance to tell? No mantra is set in stone, when is it useful to break this rule? Think through standard movement categories; steps, choreography, gesture, even mime.

Creative

Generate an extensive list of all the tools you can think of to 'show' meaning in dance. Think out of the box. Don't be afraid to borrow from other art genres. You might start your list with; breath, timing, energy, change...keep going. Next, start simple, mime 'you come here' or 'I love you' for example. Build a back story, a motive. Build a character. Define the moment this needs to be said. Working from your list of tools, use them with the mime to communicate emotional story. Make it a question, a statement, a suggestion... How many versions can you create? This process may cause you to add to your list of tools. Now take away the mime. Communicate the sentiment using your tools along with movement and choreography and 'show' without telling.
