July 20 Thoughts and Ideas

Creative Musings

One concern in teaching live online classes is how to get the energy feedback that normally passes back and forth between students and instructor in a live class. Perhaps this has to do with focus of the eyes on the screen as opposed to the camera. Perhaps it has to do with the size of the image and the screen. Try experiments with focus. Try to deal with the visual focus of the students. Design the exercises so the screen (you) is their audience to focus on. Discuss the problem, possibly ask one student per exercise to narrate and direct the class's focus while you watch allowing you to focus on that student alone. Build in more feedback, with student responses. Add-in pre-class, mid-class, post-class verbal back and forth. Experiment and share any successes.

Conversation Launch

When hiring/casting dance positions, how do we discriminate whether choices made are due to artistic vision for a project or oppressive policy... or conscious/unconscious bias? "We" being both the dancer and the individual/organization casting. How do you make decisions? What do you feel and/or assume when passed over? Reflect and have a conversation.

and, Finally...

Honoring World-class hoop Dancer Nakotah LaRance who died last week. Enjoy an interview with clips of his performing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJXbJlIOG84
