Thoughts and Ideas 10/9

CONVERSATION Starter

Costuming for performance. The vision for a choreography arrives. The research and movement is set, the rehearsals done. Discuss the influence of costuming in your dance process, from vision, collaboration, practicalities, to wearing and moving, to viewing. Talk about successful and poor collaboration in design. Does it change the way the dancer moves? Feels? Invests in the part? Does the dancer interact with the costume? What pitfalls can be avoided, what standout successes have you learned from? Discuss when you wore a costume that you hated or loved, and whether the audience agreed. Discuss financial constraints. Discuss why different genres of dance have traditional and stereotypical costuming. Do you have a costume designer to recommend or appreciate? Shout it out.

Creative Experiment

With one piece of music, create a short dance for yourself or others. Perform it for yourself or each other in a variety of costuming available (that both fits and doesn't!). Consider wearing the traditional style of costuming from a different dance genre. Consider clothes from the closet, yours or someone else's. Evaluate how you perform and feel in each variation you create. Do you change the movement based on a visual or a feel, or at all? Do you interact with the costume? Discuss. Do you feel an impulse to change the music to fit the costume? Try it. Play, discuss, look for videos where costuming inspired you. If you are so inspired, research the history of dance costume design in your genre.
