Thoughts and Ideas 4/10

Musing

Looking through ABQ Dance Connect Updates from the last three years, I was struck by how they reflected the support and community connection needed during the isolation and uncertainty of the early pandemic. Taking a long view sometimes provides an interesting perspective. Look back and see what you remember.

CONVERSATION Starter

Meaning. Artists take different stances on the meaning in their choreography. Some say, 'Here is my inspiration, but the audience can decide what 'it' means to them.' Others want the audience to read a program which tells them what a work represents, and yet other's design the choreography or art piece to clearly show a specific meaning they want an audience to see. Discuss these choices.

Creative Experiment

Grab the nearest object. Silently assign it meaning. Write this first idea. Create movement to show the meaning you have assigned to the object. Start with literal and gestural representations. As you repeat allow yourself to depart from the original meaning. Play with abstractions. Write and compare the meaning you felt by the end to the original. Show a fellow dancer two versions. Discuss the connection between the words on paper and your presentation.
