Thoughts and Ideas 12/5

CONVERSATION Starter

Control. Giving up control, literally and figuratively. Consider varied philosophies on control and how each can oppose the other. Being in control of emotions is desired at times, considered stoic at others. Being in control of the body provides command, knowns, and physical safety, and yet can also become rigid and boring. Needing control of a project can be reassuring to yourself and a group or stressful and a battle of wills. Sometimes we hang on to control like a life preserver. What happens when you let go? Have a conversation about control. Look for dance styles movement situations requiring both, look for places in your life where you have found that both having control and giving up control improved an outcome. What conditions exist to make your less natural choice work for you? What are the advantages?

Exploratory

Play with the two dichotomies on control in an alternating movement sequence of your invention. Play with another dancer. Discuss what you feel and observe with each other. Just for fun, play with meaning as well as movement.
