Thoughts and Ideas 5/16

Converstation Starter

Conversation starter: Giving and Receiving criticism. Dancers have already conquered the fear of exposing themselves and their bodies to criticism through their dance training. We don't however, always give or receive criticism beneficially. As we continue in our dance professions the need for professional critique and feedback remains constant in order to continue to grow and build our skills as dancers, choreographers, teachers, writers, etc. and our skill in giving critique becomes even more important. Consider critique as empowerment, intended to be useful to the artist, and wield it responsibly. What are helpful ways to give and receive criticism?

Criticism practice without the artist: Find a piece of visual art or choreography.

  1. Observe without judgement. Describe what you see; genre, content, objects, shapes, pattern, media, dimension, costume, lighting, etc. Be literal. Describe what these observations evoke in you emotionally. Describe anything that strikes you as meaningful, exciting, etc.

  2. Analyze. Ask yourself why the artist chose to use A or B. Ask yourself why or how an emotion or response in you was evoked.

  3. Ask yourself what was the artists purpose.

  4. Evaluate the way you spoke to yourself. Were you non judgmental? Was your analysis constructive? Would your critique be useful to a work in progress?
