NWD: Keshet Press Statement

We are excited to be participating in the National Water Dance in collaboration with Keshet Dance Company this year! Please see Keshet’s press release about this event below.

Keshet Dance Company and ABQ Dance Connect join NWD Projects

for the 5th Bi-Annual National Water Dance

Dancing Out of Time

Keshet Dance Company, together with ABQ Dance Connect (with support from the City of Albuquerque Public Art Program), is excited to join the National Water Dance Projects once again in assembling a national movement choir for the 5th Annual National Water Dance, culminating in a simultaneous livestreamed dance performance during Earth Day weekend. On Saturday, April 23, at 2:00pm MST, dancers across the United States will join together in a nation-wide synchronous dance event at water sites both rural and urban, remote and public, bringing attention to our need to be accountable for the water that sustains us. National Water Dance is an artist-driven collective of dancers, students, educators, and community members who create concurrent performances across the country. We invite everyone to come dance with us and engage in the actions on climate change that will help bring us back into balance with this precious planet that we all call home.

This year we are excited to welcome Felipe Barral and IGNI Productions who will be live streaming sites all over the country. The live stream will begin at 1:30pm MST with interviews and information about many of the participating organizations as well as environmental issues and a peek into participants’ creative processes. The performance will begin exactly at 2:00pm MST.

Keshet’s Pre-Professional Program dancers (KP3) have contributed movement phrases to the national project. Our KP3 dancers will also be presenting a pop-up performance outside the Albuquerque BioPark Botanical Gardens at 10:00am, and Keshet Dance Company will be performing inside the Albuquerque BioPark Botanical Gardens at 11:15am, before our multigenerational community dance students and the Keshet Company dancers join the livestream movement choir with dancers from across the nation at 2pm MST.

When: Saturday, April 23rd, 2022, 10am, 11:15am, and 2pm

Where: Albuquerque BioPark Botanic Gardens, Bandshell Stage at the Zoo and online

About Keshet: Established in 1996, Keshet’s mission is to inspire and unite community by fostering unlimited possibilities through dance, mentorship and a creative space for the arts. In 2013, the Keshet Center for the Arts was created as a home base for Keshet’s production season and as a resource for Keshet’s national and global performing arts partnerships; a welcoming space to house Keshet’s community education and engagement programming; and the central location for the Keshet Ideas and Innovation Community (KIIC), a business incubator and resource center for arts entrepreneurs.

About NWD: National Water Dance is a catalyst that encourages ongoing engagement between dance and the environment. Beginning in 2011 as a statewide project in Florida, it now boasts 65 locations across the United States—in 2018 including Puerto Rico for the first time. With each event National Water Dance recommits itself to the effort of increasing purposeful awareness to drive action on environmental issues, specifically climate change. Supporting the work of participants beyond our biannual event, National Water Dance spreads the word on the environmental issues they are tackling through monthly newsletters and social media. Our goal is to realize the power of dance as an engine of social change.
