Thoughts and Ideas
Conversation Starter
Recently I overheard an authority figure speaking on writing. He was emphasizing the practice of "show don't tell", the writing practice that actively engages the reader to fill in negative space, to enter the story. He said all other forms of art are passive to the audience except reading, when the writer shows not tells. I was triggered. Are you? How is he right? How is he wrong? Discuss the difference in dance performance that actively engages the audience versus a performance that is passive entertainment. Discuss other art forms that engage the viewer. How is it done? Justify a need for each, passive entertainment and active engagement.

What is negative space in dance?
Creative Experiment
Explore "show not tell". Create a movement series that you feel is passive entertainment. Create a movement series that you feel promotes active audience engagement. Show both to a friend and discuss the efforts and results.
