Thoughts and Ideas 3/28

Conversation Starter

Collaborative skills. Consider the relationship of the artist/choreographer to the collaborating artists; set designers, lighting designers, musicians, costume designers, makeup artists, in the service of presenting performance. What are the skills needed in conversation? What tools can the choreographer use to aid transmitting a vision? Likewise what tools can the collaborating artists use to aid in understanding the choreographers vision, fulfill their own vision and incorporate the two into a successful collaboration?

Creative Experiment

Find both a piece of dance performance (trailer/full piece), and a recorded discussion about the piece with the choreographer that may include rehearsal footage. Watch the discussion and/or rehearsal first. Stop. Before watching the performance/trailer try to envision staging elements; costumes, lighting, set, makeup, music. Attempt to verbalize what you imagine answering two questions; Can you give me an example? What does "it" mean? Watch the performance/trailer. Try to verbalize what you see in terms of vision and results. Use the two elements Give an example, explain what "it" means, to aid in your description. Crystal Pite, and her work "Betroffenheit" has a variety of videos available on YouTube that may help. Alternatively if you have an opportunity to watch a live rehearsal and talk to a choreographer, practice the exercise of envisioning, describing by example and meaning, your vision for performance of the piece.
