Thoughts and Ideas

Conversation Starter

Pedagogy. Taking a street style off the street. What considerations are important when moving a street style of dance into the studio? Rearrange the question. What about taking a concert style to the street? Generalize the question, what is important when teaching a known style out of it's natural environment? Is knowing the "craft" enough? Are there heightened considerations when teaching in a studio versus on the street or vice versa? You will have immediate answers, but dig deeper. What are your responsibilities as an instructor or what do you want to see in an instructor?

MUsing

Seeing while dancing. What do you see when you dance? For instance, do you see the space, the chair, the art on the wall, the person in the room, while you are dancing, or are you internal, in tune to your body and the thoughts provoked by your movement, could you be anywhere? Investigate the answers, ask why? Are there situations where it is helpful to be open and see vs being absorbed in the work? Bonus question, do you look into the faces of the individuals in your audience while you perform? When you teach?

Creative Experiment

  1. Take a known exercise. See the space while moving through it on the first run through. What do you observe in your body, emotions and thoughts? Work with the movement internally for a while, and then repeat making the effort to see and relate to the space. Reflect.

  2. Create a new movement exercise while seeing the room. Do the first movement that comes to you, see the room and let the next movement be a reaction to the space. Continue to experiment and alternate between seeing the room and working internally.
