August 17th Thoughts and Ideas

Creative Musings

If you were to dress up today, would you dance differently?

Conversation Starter

Dance labels, origins, assignment, ownership. Who can claim to be a specific type of dancer in a dance form that originates from a certain location or from a specific culture? If I dance in a form that feels right in my body but originates from another location or culture than my own, is it mine? Do we risk stereotyping or judging ourselves or others harmfully when we say "Because I am ______, I dance this way," or, "I cannot dance that way because I am ______'"?

Reflect on this topic, replace words; pronouns, forms, cultures, locations, verbs, in the questions to suit your own inquiry. Reverse your questions. Apply the questions to performance and teaching.
