Jazz, Laura Orozco Garrett

What is Jazz? Throughout this past semester, I have been investigating and in conversation with dance historians, jazz teachers, and jazz dance lovers via the Albuquerque Jazz Dance Book Club about what makes jazz dance jazz. I’ve realized that some of the jazz I hold dearly to my heart is truly Musical Theater Dance which holds its own important place in the dance world. Some of the aspects of Jazz are the same values of why I feel dance is so important: individuality, dancing with the music, and most importantly, dancing in community. Come dance and explore what maybe is or is not jazz, but definitely will be a fun time.

Laura Orozco Garrett is a professional dancer, choreographer, and educator based in Albuquerque, NM. She holds key positions at Keshet Dance Company, including Company Dancer and Community Education and Pre-Professional Program Manager. Laura has choreographed for companies all over New Mexico, including the Santa Fe Playhouse, Millennial Music Makers (Tri-M) Productions, and more.
